Tim Rodenkirk will be leading a field trip on Sunday 10/25/26 at the North Spit of Coos Bay. The old Weyerhaeuser settling pond site has been getting busy with winter ducks and is a great spot to look at gulls. Sometimes we get a few interesting passerines too.
We will be meeting at the BLM boat ramp at 0730. The boat ramp is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1Kr3QJQLYXRwxwvB9
To get there from the south you need to drive all the way through Coos Bay and North Bend and drive over the mile long McCullough Bridge and past there take your first left onto a diked road. Follow that past the train tracks and stay left at the first intersection past there (do NOT go right onto the Horsfall Beach Road) on the main road and then just stay straight on the main road all the way out to the boat ramp. The boat ramp is on the left and there is an American Flag there, bathrooms, a host trailer, etc. so it is pretty obvious.
From the boat ramp the site we will be birding is just down the road. We will spend a few hours at the pond site including walking out to the beach observation point which is a little less than a mile one way. This is a good spot to have your spotting scope if you have one. I would bring snacks and water, your binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one (we can share if you do not have a spotting scope), and whatever else you need for the morning. I assume we would be done by noon. I have my fingers crossed we will get lucky and get some of the last sun before November arrives but always bring your rain gear- it helps ward off the rain too if you have it! Please contact me if you would like to come on the trip, ideally before Thursday the 22nd. If we get a nasty weather forecast, I may cancel or change the time and location of the field trip, so it is always good to contact me before the trip to make sure it is a go.
