For our next field trip, we are looking at another gull trip in Bandon. At low tide, across from the downtown area, there is a large sandbar that gulls love in the winter and which is an awesome spot to go out and check out gulls from close range which is what you have to do to learn about them and their differences, This time of year Tim Rodenkirk always schedules two days for a field trip and hope one has decent weather! This month he is looking at either November 29th or 30th. The low tides are actually in the PM so this is would be the perfect trip for those who like to sleep in in the AM, as we would meet at the North Jetty Parking Area at the end of the road at Bullard’s Beach State Park at 10 or 11AM and go out for about 3 hours (sunsets are by like 5PM so it will start feeling late by 3PM). I have never done a gull trip this late in the day but if the birds are not out there, we can find a few gulls elsewhere in Bandon. The gull trip is open to all- it is just such a common species everywhere on the south coast in the winter and it is nice to be able to identify them, A field trip can really help you start feeling confident on identifying at least the adults (which are like 80-90% of the gulls out here).
