May 14, 2024 Cape Arago Audubon Society meeting minutes

Board members present: Harv Schubothe, president and Diane Follansbee, treasurer

absent: Barbara Taylor, secretary and Bruce Follansbee, vice president

33 other guests in attendance

Harv welcomed the group at 7:00 PM at the Bandon Library meeting room. He announced that this is our last program until we resume in September.

Field trips: Tim will lead one on Wednesday, May 15th with meeting at Ray’s Market in Bandon at 5:30 AM to go see the black swifts on lower four Mile Road. The second trip will be to Flores Creek, and folks are to meet at the Langlois Store at 5:45 AM on Sat, May 17th.

Tim Yaukey has put together a new website for our chapter – it is capearagobirds.org. He is donating his talent and time – thank you Tim. On the website you will find Tim Rodenkirk’s 300 page book . You will find it under local birding.

Joe Metzler will be educating folks with his birded boxes at the Coos Watershed’s Mayfly event at Mingus Park on Saturday, May 17th from 11-3. Joe will represent our local chapter there. Diane has volunteered to help, and all others are welcome to help, too.

Larry Basch will lead a hike into the Kalmiopsis wilderness area on Saturday, June 1st to look at wildflowers and wildlife. Contact him for more information.

Harv introduced Roy Lowe who gave a spectacular presentation of birds in Columbia. He took 40,000 photos on his recent 13 day trip there. It is no surprise that there are more species of birds there than in any other country, as there are three mountain regions with different habitats – dry desert, savanna and the Amazon Rain Forest. There are 57 million protected areas for a total of 35 million acres.

Meeting over at 8:45
