The long term forecast looks good for Mother’s Day weekend, so Saturday the 11th of May will be a promising day for a field trip to Powers County Park. We will meet at Sturdivant Park in Coquille (next to the intersection of Hwy 42S and Hwy 42) at 0530. Powers is still 45 minutes from Coquille and sunrise is around 6AM so that should get us there shortly after sunrise. It is really important to start birding early in May- the birds are most active and singing at sunrise making them easy to find then but stop singing and become very hard to find within just two or three hours after sunrise so an early start is always essential! From Coquille we will drive straight to Powers Pond and walk around the pond and then drive south of town and bird the large fields there. This area has several species of passerines one does not see along the coast. Bring water, snacks, binoculars, and rain gear (to ward off any stray showers). I figure we would be back to Myrtle Point around 11 or 12 and could check out the fairgrounds there for birds too and see if the Western Kingbirds are nesting again. So we would be back to Coquille by Noon or 1PM. Please email me by the Wednesday (8 May) beforehand so I know how many to expect. My email is:
